Israel Cover

Envelope addressed to me

This envelope arrived with stamps from Israel, one of my favourite countries in the world and of which I still need thousands more stamps lol!

The definitive set on here depict the months of the Hebrew Calendar

Day Of Issue:
24/02/2002.

100 Years Etosha National Park

I thought I would start off by posting a mini sheet and single set of the Etosha National Park which celebrates 100 years as a National Game Park this year. It was declared a Park in 1907 and every year, thousands of people visit there to watch the wild animals in their natural habitat.

  • It covers an area of 22 270 square km.
  • 114 mammal species, 340 bird species, 110 reptile species, 16 amphibian species and, surprisingly, one species of fish make their home in this amazing park.

Etosha, means "Great White Place", and is dominated by a massive mineral pan that is part of the Kalahari Basin. The Etosha Pan covers around 25% of the National Park. The pan was originally a lake fed by the Kunene River. However the course of the river changed thousands of years ago and the lake dried up. The pan fills only if the rains are heavy and only holds water for a short time.

This temporary water at Etosha Pan attracts thousands of wading birds including large flocks of flamingos. The perennial springs along the edges of the Pan draw large herds of wildlife and flocks of birds.

A San legend tells of how a village was raided and everyone but the women were slaughtered. One woman was so upset about the death of her family she cried until her tears formed a massive lake. When the lake dried up nothing was left apart from a huge white pan.

This is the single set to commemorate Etosha 100 years.

Diana - 10 Years

I remember too well the morning when i heard of her death. I was standing in my kitchen when the news came through. Strange how one seems to think that people like Diana are immortal - silly really - she was human like us - had her good points and her faults.

I post a minisheet that was issued by Namibia 10 years ago.

Wishing you all a good week ahead and happy blogging!

Princess Diana

The People's Princess
(1 July 1961 – 31 August 1997)

Tomorrow... 31st August... will be the 10th Anniversary of the death of Princess Diana, the most famous public person of our time.

For sure not everyone in the world loves her but one thing is certain... no one is indifferent to her and her work in charity projects. Who doesn't remember her pictures in a minefield in Angola, in a ballistic helmet and flak jacket?

For her charity work and for being a mind changer I pay her my tribute today.

I leave you here one image of the set that will be issued tomorrow. It's from a British overseas territory - Gibraltar. For being in black and white I think it's an even more attractive stamp set. I hope you like it!

How many countries in the world do you think will issue Diana stamps tomorrow? Do you consider all these issues to be "speculative stamps"? Or maybe not? Please give me your opinion...
Bye for now!

Wakayama - Japan

Hello! Today I'll show you one postcard I've received from Japan. It was sent from Wakayama (the capital city of Wakayama Prefecture in the Kansai region of Japan) and it depicts the Kinkakuji Temple... What is that? you may ask... Well... it was originally built in 1397 to serve as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu... Wikipedia is really a friendly and powerful tool, isn't it?... If you want you can read more here.

On the back there were 2 stamps that I think are simple but very nice. Very much Japanese-like, don't you agree?

Just to let you know that this isn't a postcard blog per se but if I find something interesting I'll show it to you all, agree?

Bye for now!

Today I've received some stamps topic WWF from the country called Queen of the Caribees also known as Nevis. (yes... I also collect that topic! If you have some to trade or sell please let me know...)

Did you know that it is an island shaped like a sombrero?

Bellow you can see the nice cover where the stamps were sent in:

It's the 1st time I see a single stamp from the caribbean of such a high value! 20ECD... almost 6 euro! Have many stamps like this in your country? I sure don't!

And today was full of 1st times... since it's also the 1st time I see the text "Received in Taped Condition" on a cover... is it very common on the covers you receive?

Ohhh... It would be so good to right now be in the Caribbean! Wouldn't it?

Contest Prize

Today it's 22nd August... yes... I know that you know today's date! But what you probably don't know is that it's the 57th anniversary of a famous US apiphobic and if you're a baseball fan... than this is one very easy contest! One hint... he was also a pitcher with a 15 year career. Easy isn't it? Well... maybe not... you tell me!

For the 1st correct answer to this email stamp.friends@gmail.com I will send for free the above stamps. They were issued by Romanian Post on 1994 about Edible Mushrooms.

If you are a fan of mushrooms... you can see here amazing photos!

You know what they say... a mushroom a day keeps the doctor away! eheh

Misguided Postman

From Malta

Hello fellow collectors... what do you think of this cover?

1st: the postman missed the stamps when doing the cancellation ... well... I guess it's a light cancel isn't it? LOL! That's what the sender asked for "PLEASE CANCEL LIGHTLY"!

2nd: the same or probably another postman seeing the stamps without any cancellation mark decided to use the famous "Rollerball pen" type of cancellation...

My question is... does something similar to this happens in your country?

Winner of the opening ceremony's prize

Hello... How have you all been?

Yes, I'm completely fine after my friend's birthday party... ehehe

As promised in the opening ceremony post (here) I'm announcing the winner of the 1984 - Olympic Games canceled S/S.... sound of drummers rumble... Emmanuel from Nigeria.

Congratulations!

Here is the winning text he wrote me
(sorry but I had to cut some parts since it was too big!)

HOW I BECAME A STAMP COLLECTOR

"I started collecting stamps in 1987, while still in junior secondary school. [...] I soon became familiar with the post office, where I could once in a while obtain as many stamps as my pocket would permit. As time went on, I was peeling off stamps from old letters, documents and whatever I could find just to build up a collection. It became quite sizeable, but I must say my ignorance at that time cost me far too much. My thinking then was to paste the stamps in a diary which I did, then I learnt that this act alone had made them valueless. Today I use those diaries as book as demonstration books to introduce the hobby to enthusiasts and for possible exchange.
In 1995, I learnt about the Calabar Philatelic Club meeting which I attended and officially registered as a collector.
My journey has been both exciting as well as exasperating- excitement at finding other collectors wants for exchange and exasperation at failing to meet some collection targets. [...] Learning about the stories behind the stamps and waiting for unknown opportunities is also great. These can be many or once in a blue moon. Stamps have made me well informed, much of the information I have acquired has come from stamps, and there is much more to learn.
During the years when NIPOST hiked postage in my country, it became difficult keeping up with the volume of mail. But today, things are looking up again. The Internet has been a veritable tool box to find, interact with and exchange or swap stamps and other philatelic materials with other collectors. [...] That said, just being a collector is not enough, be an informed one- properly educated on the nitty gritty of stamps, the items that matter and above all how to detect fake or bogus ones. Join the family of collectors.
Philately will cost you because you will need to subscribe to magazines that give adequate information. In 1999 during my youth service, I founded the first NYSC philatelic club in the history of
Nigeria at Katsina State.
Stamps have taken me to new frontiers and I am embracing it with a renewed vigor. [...]
Friends, do not wait on the sidelines to get involved. The King of Hobbies is a world waiting to be discovered. In it, you will find what makes royalty of ordinary people. Today, stamps are a money making venture if well developed and are well ranked in the area of tourism being good ambassadors to introduce the Countries they represent. "

Compact Disk... Can you live without it?

25th Anniversary of the Compact Disk
( AKA the CD)

Today I'm leaving for a friend's birthday gathering... you can bet it will be great! Would you care to join me?

But before I go... let me tell you that today is the 25th anniversary of the creation of the CD. The 1st CD was released to the market from the Phillips Germany factory near Hannover on August 17, 1982... who could imagine that those so familiar vinyl records would be killed by the CD format?

A long time has passed... will this format reach his 50th Anniversary? Others have appeared... like the DVD and now the Blue Ray and HD-DVD (with a fierce fight for market leadership!) and yes... you can tell me... CD is also comatose because now we have digital music on MP3 but then I ask you who doesn't love to hear their favorite songs on a nice CD on their home stereo? Well... I sure do!

And what about the stamps... know any worldwide issues about CDs on stamps? I think probably there are some... Have any? Send me some images and there will be some surprise for you in the mail!

Have a great day... and stay tunned!

Joint Issue Portugal-Peru

Stronger bonds between Portugal and Peru

On 10th Aug. Portuguese Post Office issued one stamp depicting the architect and painter Raul Maria Pereira (Sabrosa, Portugal 1877-1933 Lima). This year is his 130 anniversary.

On the background of the stamp you can see the "Casa de Correos y Telégrafos" (Post Office House) located in Lima, Peru designed by him.

Technical details of the issue:

facial value: € 0,75
size: 30,6x40 mm

I'm planning on making a joint FDC Portugal-Peru so if you can send me unused FDC of the Peruan issue please email me and I'll return with the Portuguese FDC. Thank you.

One curiosity... Sabrosa is also the birthplace of explorer Ferdinand Magellan... His maritime voyage became known as the first successful attempt at circumnavigation of the Earth. And even stranger... "Sabrosa" is also track 8 on the Beastie Boys' 1994 album Ill Communication... Well... I don't like that much of them but who doesn't know their songs?!? Barbara Ann, Good Vibrations, Surfin'USA, California Girls... and may others!! Do people still listen to their music?

Post Office clerks

Why are some Post Office clerks so bloody annoying?

Today I went to my local Post Office to have some of my covers hand cancelled… you know how we philatelists like our stamps with nice cancellations… an there they refused to do it… why?, you ask… and so did I… I was told that from now on the stamps couldn’t be hand cancelled only done mechanically… by those machines that we all know that gives us some badly chapped cancellations… I reluctantly accepted it but of course filled my complaint… I only hope that it was just a bad day for the clerk and if not at least that this measure doesn’t spread nationally. Does this also happen in your country?

But let us forget bad things… that can kill stamp collecting… and talk about some nice things… About yesterday’s topic… Postage & Revenue … I thank all fellow collectors that sent me emails about it… so what was that cover?

GB Postal Stationery - Facial Value 2 1/2 d - Issued 1982
With 2 other stamps performing a total postage of 7 1/2d

Departure Date: London 29 Dec. 1899
Arrival Date: Hamburg 30 Dec. 1899

1 single day... London-Hamburg! WOW!!!!

Thank you Allan for the great explanation on the above Postal Stationery that you have left on Comments section... that was one priceless history lesson on classic GB philately... thank you!

Time for me to go and have dinner... Talk to you later... Lets see what you have to say about all this...

Meghdoot Cards

In response to the topic on the Meghdoot cards, I would like to add that I find these cards very attractive. I have chatted with Raghavendra in our chat room at http://www.ipdaonline.org and in the past bought some of these cards from him. Well, over 100 of them actually .

The question was raised, does Portugal issue this type of card? Well, I can't answer for Portugal, but, one thing that comes to mind when I see these Meghdoot cards is Belgium. Belgium produces cards that are called "Publibel" cards and they have advertising on the left side of them where the right side is left for postage, very similar to the Meghdoot cards. There is a specialized catalogue for the Publibel cards but it is expensive but worth it.

My questions to Raghavendra are : How long has India been producing these cards? Is there a specialized catalogue that lists these and other India postal stationery?

I find these cards quite interesting to say the least.

Happy collecting

Nigeria Forgeries

Hi,

As this is my first post in this blog I'm happy to show your readers 2 covers from Nigeria that I've received recently. The stamps are forgeries (color xerox copies) but this didn't prevent them from having circulated.

Regards,

moguntia

PS. It's good to know that you've finally received this huge stamp lot. I'm sure it contains something interesting for all of you.

200Kg of stamps

Good morning to you all...

Today I'm here to let you know about yesterday's adventure... I and some other philatelists from a national stamp club bought 200Kg of stamps in one lot.... yes you heard it right... 200Kg (more kg or less kg!) of stamps...you must be wondering how crazy these guys are, aren't you? Well... I can assure you that we are that crazy when it's about stamps!

Inventory of the lot!

  1. 140 stamp albums
  2. 530 'ERSTTAGSBLATT' collection each bearing the stamp issue, cancelled by a special First Day of Issue cancellation
  3. 800 covers including FDCs
  4. Postal Stationery

So what does it have to do with me not having posted yesterday?!? It's quite simple... yesterday we all got together to split the lot between all of us! Can you imagine how difficult it is to split such a big lot? None the less we managed it and in the end the smaller lots looked like this:

Mine is the one marked 1 in the image above. I don't even know for sure what's in there since I didn't have the time to calmly go through it ... but there is lots of stamps and other stamps related items so count with other posts in the future about this lot with offers for trade, selling and also for sure give aways!

One special thank you to the colleague and friend that offered his home, food and of course wine giving us the change to pass another day celebrating this great hobby that's stamp collecting!

Now... off I go diving in my stamp box... see you soon!

United Countries of Harry Potter

As promised here is the next cover I've received today...

On this cover you can see one S/S from France - "Harry Potter" - Fête du Timbre 2007

Personally I like this S/S... I've never read any of the books' series because they just aren't my cup of tea... apologies to the fans! But i surely understand all the fuss around them... you can see all the madness of the book release day here ... I saw one or another Harry Potter cinema movie and they were good...

But lets get back to the stamps... There's a world fever for Harry in some Postal Offices around the globe... Another blogger and philatelist friend
*cddstamps* already talked about what happened in the UK with orders for over 300,000 issues... which is a major profit for their Postal Office. The same thing happened in France with stamps, booklets, M/S and S/S issued... like I said before personally I like the S/S above... but some questions arise:

1. Did the collectors buy these stamps because their countries' post office released them to make some easy profit and since they collect all their countries' stamps these ones ought to be bought?

OR

2. Did the Post Offices issue these sets to fulfill the need of the fans and collectors of Harry Potter to have an extra item in their collections without thinking of company profits?

What do you, my readers, have to say about this? Am I being too naive or simply showing to be the Harry Potter fan I didn't know I was?

Please post some comments... or if you prefer just email me... I wonder how many Harry issues are out there... starting to get an headache just thinking about that! eheh

Goodnight and see you tomorrow in another stamp trip around the world!!!

1st MEGHDOOT Postal Stationery was issued on 02.09.2002 depicting Rajinikanth (Indian Movie Actor). Have you ever seen any of his movies? If so, let me know!

"The Tapada Nacional de Mafra was created in Mafra, Portugal, during the reign of king João V, following the building of the Mafra National Palace, as a park for royal and court recreation.

Covering over 8 square kilometres, the park holds different species of deer, wild boar, foxes, birds of prey and many others coexisting in an unusually rich and diversified natural habitat. A favourite of the Portuguese monarchy for hunting and other leisure pursuits, the Tapada de Mafra took on a noble connotation that has done much to aid its preservation and continuity.

Its natural heritage ensures it is an excellent location for environmental awareness and education programmes. The Tapada is also open for walking, mountain biking, horse riding, archery and crossbow shooting activities."
