Algerian Cover

Airmail: ALGERIA

Algeria is an African country from where I don't receive many covers but they have very interesting stamps as you can see from the cover bellow.

They don't issue many stamp sets per year (around 20 sets), which makes it an interesting country to collect!

All the stamps on the cover were issued this year 2007 and from left to right you can see:

1. Afr0-Asian 2nd games issued in a 1v set. - here

Lighthouses, 3v set - Le phare de l'îlot d'Arzew - here

3. Animals
, 2v set - La hyène rayée - here

Probably this will be my last post this year so I wish you all a great 2008!!!
Enjoy the reveillon!!!

Late Christmas Post

Christmas Post - Russia

I hope you all had a great Christmas and that Santa and his helpers gave you lots and lots more of... yes .... stamps!!! I've received my country's year book... was a bit disappointed with the quality of it but you can't say NO to whatever comes from the North Pole, specially if it's stamps related, right?

Today I have a late Xmas cover to show you... on the upper right corner of the envelope you can see a big size rectangular stamp... that I was in fact missing in my collection... thank you! ... I find it to be very nice... depicting a Christmas tree in the wild covered with snow!! It was issued last year 2006. Next to it is another stamp issued in the same year in a Joint issue Armenia-Russia.

Christmas week - UK

In 19 Nov, 1985 GB issued a set of 5 stamps depicting PANTOMIME and celebarting Christmas.

But What is a pantomime, anyway? (click here for more details)

Pantomime is a curious entertainment - a form of ritual theatre staged around the winter solstice.

Originally silent (a form of mime), it is now anything but, with extensive vocalisation from both the performers and the audience.

Pantomime video clip here! Have fun!

Christmas week - Portugal

Today I'm posting to apologize to the Christmas related stamps collector!

Why? The reason is simple...

If you want to collect this kind of stamps from Portugal 2007 you are out of luck! For several years now that Portuguese PO doesn't issue a set commemorating Christmas... It's really a shame since almost 100% of the people living in Portugal will celebrate it in a way or another!

So why did they stopped issuing that topic on stamps? That is a question I don't know how to answer! Mystery.... abduction by aliens of the Christmas stamp designer? PO conspiration? Who knows!?!

This was the last set issued 1999, when Portugal issued 4 stamps with paintings by handicapped persons.

From left to right and top to bottom, you can see: 1. The adoration of the magi morse 2. The nativity tablet 3. The adoration of the magi tablet 4. The angel appearing to the sheperds medallion

This year, the stamp devoted to the modern design features the work of the Catalan born illustrator, Joan Ferràndiz, whilst the classic theme depicts a fragment of the altarpiece of the chapel of the Sacramento representing the Epiphany in the cathedral of Huesca, by master sculptor from Valencia, Damián Forment." Letter from Mauritius

"Officially the Republic of Mauritius is an island nation off the coast of the African continent in the southwest Indian Ocean, about 900 kilometers (560 mi) east of Madagascar" in WIKI

I really enjoy the stamps on this cover! Colourful and with local related themes.

The left isolated stamp belongs to set of 6 stamps issued this year 2007 about corals. The one shown here is the Head Coral.

The other 2 stamps were issued last year 2006 about Ecology in a 4v set - Artificial Reefs and Erosion Control.

The Mauritius Marine Conservation Society, the Mauritian Scuba Diving Association and the National Coast Guard with the help of the Mauritius Marine Authority have created such artificial reefs by sinking 14 vessels around Mauritius since 1980, in depth of 12 to 73 meters of water.

During the mid 20th century, in Rodrigues, the Agricultural Department developed the concept of terraced areas, to fight erosion and to make arable land available to a maximum number of families.

Hello! Today I have a cover from India to show you... It was sent by registered mail.

The stamps on the cover are in a complete set of 4 depicting 'RENEWABLE ENERGY'.

"Renewable energy effectively utilizes natural resources which are naturally replenished."

From Left to Right and Top to Bottom
you can see (some descriptions for the kids):

1. 'SOLAR ENERGY' Solar energy can be converted into other forms of energy. The major drawbacks of are: the intermittent and variable manner in which it arrives at the earth's surface and, the large area required to collect it at a useful rate.

2. 'WIND ENERGY' Wind energy is mainly used to generate electricity. Wind is called a renewable energy source because the wind will blow as long as the sun shines :)

3. 'SMALL HYDRO POWER' Hydro energy is electricity made using water.

4. 'BIOMASS ENERGY' There are a wide variety of biomass energy resources, including tree and grass crops and forestry, agricultural, and urban wastes. It is the oldest source of renewable energy known to humans, used since our ancestors learned the secret of fire. And what a great 1st day cancellation showing the sun... very nicely done! Without the sun no other energy could exist!!!

Portuguese Postage Label

What do you think of the above postage label from Portugal?

I usually receive more stamps in covers than postage labels or even ATM stamps from friends and collectors... but this one is a good example of a modern FRAMA label in a recent circulated cover!

Do you collect this type of philatelic items? If so, please leave your comments here or send me an email to Thank you!

Norse Mythology

Norse Mythology from Norway

What is there with mythology that always makes me wonder.... doesn't that happen to you?

In a joint three-part stamp series, the Nordic postal administrations are giving us an insight into Norse mythology.

From time immemorial, Nordic folklore has it that these beings exist, scaring and fascinating mankind. The existence of these beings served as an explanation to most natural phenomena and was also practical in child upbringing.

Norway’s subjects this time are a Sami shaman’s drum and a detail from a door panel in a stave church.

The Shaman’s drum, with its runic symbols, was used to accompany the Sami joik. The sound of the drum helped the shaman to fall into a trance and travel in the spirit world.

Door panel detail from Hylestad Stave Church
(now in the Museum of National Antiquities in Oslo), showing the dragon, Fafnir.

Like a children story but much more terrific!

Burkina Faso

Today I'm showing a cover from an African Country!
It's my 1st letter from Burkina Faso!

Do you know where it's located? It is surrounded by six countries: Mali to the north, Niger to the east, Benin to the south east, Togo and Ghana to the south, and Côte d'Ivoire to the south west.

Formerly called the Republic of Upper Volta. Independence from France came in 1960. You can see some pictures of the country at Helge's blog here.

The stamp on the cover was issued last year (2006) to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the EMS CHRONOPOST at BURKINA (short name for Burkina Faso).

EMS CHRONOPOST is really an universal service, isn't it?

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day

1 December 2007

World AIDS Day was founded in 1988 by the World Health Organization. This year once again the focus is on stigma and discrimination, one of the major obstacles to effective HIV/AIDS prevention and care.

Each day 14,000 people - half of them between the ages of 15 and 24 - are newly infected. In most countries there are no legal protections for HIV-positive people or their loved ones and they are regularly discriminated against and marginalized. This year's World AIDS Day campaign is focused on breaking the silence on this issue and confronting the discrimination around us. Help us fight fear, shame, ignorance and injustice worldwide! There are now 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS throughout the world, with more than 25 million people in sub-Saharan Africa infected.

Portuguese Cork!

Issue date:
2007/11 /28

Portugal issued the worlds 1st stamp made from CORK - subset of generic cork tissue, harvested from the Cork Oak tree - with a facial value of 1 Euro.

First Day Cover

Portugal is responsible for half of the world's cork production!

This stamp is a valid way to celebrate a national heritage and big source of income.

Interesting stamp, wouldn't you agree?
